General information

Australia’s fast-start finance package totals AUD 599 million of grant-based Official Development Assistance. It will be delivered using existing partnerships, mechanisms and relationships. Consistent with the Copenhagen Accord, Australia’s fast-start package is balanced between adaptation (52%) and mitigation (48%). At least 25% of the package will benefit small island developing states.

Australia’s fast-start package is comprised of the following:

  1. AUD 248 million to the ‘International Climate Change Adaptation Initiative’ to support adaptation efforts, particularly in the Pacific;
  2. AUD 146 million to the ‘International Forest Carbon Initiative’ to assist developing countries reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation;
  3. AUD 131 million to multilateral agencies to assist developing countries mitigation and adaptation efforts; 
  4. AUD 38 million delivered through the climate change component of Australia’s contribution to the fifth replenishment of the Global Environment Facility; and
  5. AUD 36 million to other climate change activities in developing countries, including AUD 15 million to ‘Climate Change Partnerships for Development’.
